MSS Awards Manufacturers a victory
(Virginia Beach, VA) In the ongoing "Time & Cost War" in manufacturing, MSS guru Mark Banus believes there are two universal truths. "One: The big, easy targets have already been hit. Two: Progress will now be marked by a continuing series of smaller, but significant, victories."
Banus, the executive vice president of Stilwell & Associates, spends most of his time working directly with manufacturers to eliminate invisible costs, especially lost production and the expense of labor during routine and unexpected maintenance. "Manufacturers can often tell me, to the penny, the cost of losing an hour of production on a particular line," he says. "I show them how to increase production and profits by decreasing downtime and labor costs with TagLink MSS Maintenance Safety Software."
MSS computerizes the Maintenance Safety processes, which includes lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space and hot work permitting. This computerization saves at least 90% of the time required to perform the paper-based handwritten systems currently in most plants. "Our research in manufacturing plants shows that the computerized process can recover significant production time. Increased production time means increased revenue!
"Say it takes an hour and fifteen minutes to complete the paper process. During that time the production line is stopped and your people are not as productive as you want them to be! MSS cuts the LOTO time to less than 10 minutes, This can save over an hour per evolution. For larger tagouts, the time saved can be 8-10 hours. What is that worth on your line?" Banus asks his clients. "Because using TagLink is easier than hand writing the permits, both compliance and accuracy improve."
Oddly, the low cost of Maintenance Safety Software, about $10,000 per site, may contribute to it being overlooked. "Manufacturers may wonder how such an inexpensive package can produce such solid, immediate and long-term results," Banus says.
"First of all, Windows-based MSS saves time and money by standardizing and computerizing a time-consuming manual process. Second: MSS links seamlessly to popular CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Software) applications to help speed the maintenance process. Third: Additional MSS benefits include templates to expedite repetitive procedures, built-in confined space and hot work permits, and automatic record archiving for OSHA."
Industrial sectors currently saving time and money using MSS include manufacturing, power generation, chemical, oil and gas, pulp and paper, food processing, and the US military.
